PART 5
The Legal Metrology (PACKAGED COMMODITIES) RULES 2011
Understanding the manner of the declarations on the package Rule 9
Now that we have covered what information needs to appear on the labels of a package commodity, where and how this information needs to appear on packages, it is also important to ensure that we take into consideration the “Manner” in which this information has to be put on the packages.
Finishing touches on the package:
All mandatory information that needs to be put on a package commodity needs to be “Clear” and “Prominently” visible on the package.
Further, especially, the numerals or numbers for the “ Retail Sale Price & Net Quantity” declaration needs to be printed , painted or inscribed on the package that is contrasting with the background of the package.
-The contrast requirement can be avoided in a case where the mandatory package information is blown , moulded or formed in a glass or plastic container of a package.
Fancy Handwriting or Hand Script: The mandatory declaration should be completely clear and legible in case this information is printed in handwriting or hand script on a package.
Liquid Commodity: The declaration should be put on a package such that there is NO need to see through the liquid commodity in a package to read the declarations.
Packages with outside Container or Wrapper i.e. additional packaging
Additional packages which are NOT see through: All mandatory declarations needed to be put on both the outside container or wrapper as well as the internal package in case the outer container or wrapper is NOT see through.
Additional packages which ARE see through: In case the outside container or wrapper is transparent and the declarations on the internal package are easily readable and legible through such outside wrapper or container then mandatory declarations needed can only be put on the internal package commodity.
Which Languages can be used:
At the bare minimum, The Mandatory declarations required to be put on product labels should be either in Hindi or in English or in Devnagri script. Any other language script in addition to any of the above three language scripts can also be used.
