Understanding the name and address of manufacturer requirement on the package Rule 10 

As per the The Legal Metrology (PACKAGED COMMODITIES) RULES 2011, there are clear instructions on how to treat the subject of declaring The Name and address of the manufacturer on the packaged commodities. In our earlier article : The Legal Metrology (PACKAGED COMMODITIES) RULES 2011 ( PART 1) : Introduction & MANDATORY DECLARATION ON LABELS ( Rule 6), we discussed this aspect. In this article, we will discuss this in more detail.

As per rules, the name and complete address of manufacturer should be declared on each package offered or exposed or kept for sale.

In case, the manufacturer is NOT the packer, then the name and complete address of manufacturer and the packer should be declared on each package offered or exposed or kept for sale.

In case of imported packages,then the name and complete address of Importer should be declared on each package offered or exposed or kept for sale. 

In case of commodity is manufactured outside India is also packed in India, then the name and complete address of the importer and packer in India should appear on the principal panel display of the package. 

Packages with capacity of 10 cubic cm or less can be compliant by only having any mark or inscription which would help a consumer or any other stakeholder to identify the manufacturer or importer or packer.

What does “Complete Address” actually mean?

In case of registered address: In such a case, the complete address is the postal address at which the respective company or firm is registered or factory is situated.

In any other case: IN any other case, the complete address is as follows:

• The name of the street 
• A number (if any) assigned to the premises of the manufacturer / packer / importer 
• Name of the City and State where business is carried on by manufacturer / packer / importer 
• PIN Postal Index Code where business is carried on by manufacturer / packer / importer 

The objective of the above is to ensure a consumer can identify and locate a manufacturer or packer or importer.
